Dear All,
you probably couldn’t care less about what I am about to write since I am a person of no importance at all, just a citizen of Europe if you will. The EU is notorious for its contempt for democracy and lack of citizen engagement. I am not a big fan of the EU, but still…
I thought long and hard whether I should write this letter or not. I mean, why bother? There are so many statements made on this issue (you’ve probably guessed by now what I’m talking about) by all kinds of people, and my opinion hardly makes any difference. Then again, why not!?
Anyway, I’ve been closely watching the debate over Britain’s membership in the EU. There are a lot of pros and cons to consider, some more evident than others, but I am not going to list them here. There is only one thing I want to point out.
There has been a lot of fear-mongering from both sides of the debate. Don’t let fear be your guide! Make this referendum a vote for the future, not out of fear, but out of a realistic understanding of the risks and the benefits involved. That is basically all I wanted to say.
Of course, I would love to see Britain remain in the EU because without you it would be a much more darker place, a place without any hope for radical reforms and renewal. It is a sad state of affairs indeed.
But even if you make a decision to separate yourself from this troubled political marriage, I am sure the people of Europe will love you forever because in our eyes you will always be the land of Shakespeare, Spice Girls and Vanessa Redgrave.
Thank you for that!
